
Project BEAMS at UTSA
The purpose of Project BEAMS is to increase the number of school psychologists - and to expand mental health programming - at high-need schools.
Key features of the program:

Collaboration between UTSA and Southwest Independent School District (SWISD) ​

Establishing intensive assistantships in which school psychology graduate students will implement a two-year, multi-tiered system of supports model of mental health and social-emotional programming at high-need SWISD schools​

Implementation of the Project BEAMS Mental Health Institute, a professional learning community consisting of school psychology graduate students, SWISD staff, and local mental health service providers​
General Expectations
Participation in Project BEAMS requires a commitment to a 19-hour/week Graduate Assistant (GA) position for two years.

GA Activities include:

Assisting in implementing a variety of evidence-based behavior and mental health support activities via the SWISD partnership to address student needs.

Assisting in implementing larger scale social-emotional learning curricula, mental health cognitive skills programs, and positive personal identity development programming.

Assisting in special education processes via evaluation, ARD/IEP development, and related services

GA Ongoing Supervision and Trainings

Students will participate in weekly supervision with SWISD staff and UTSA faculty (meet the TEAM!) to implement project activities

Students will participate in monthly professional development/training activities

Grant Obligations
Participation in Project BEAMS requires a commitment to 2-year Graduate Assistant (GA) position

Additional obligations include:

Remain in good standing in the school psychology program

Maintain full-time enrollment in the school psychology program

Commitment to work at SWISD or other designated high-need districts for a school psychology internship position in the year after completing the Project BEAMS GA (i.e., INTERNSHIP YEAR)

Commitment to work at SWISD or other designated high-need districts as a first-year school psychologist in the year after completing the school psychology internship (i.e., FIRST YEAR AFTER GRADUATION)
