Early Childhood Assessment

This line of research examines the psychometric characteristics and clinical utility of several behavioral rating scales used in early childhood assessment: Parenting Stress Index (Fourth Edition), BASC-3 Parent Rating Scales (Preschool Form), Autism Spectrum Rating Scales, and Conners Early Childhood. Data are currently being collected from caregivers of young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who are receiving services through the PLAAY lab at UTSA.

Autism Parenting Stress Index (APSI)

The APSI was specifically designed to assess parenting stress among caregivers of children with ASD. We are currently analyzing profiles of stress among caregivers, while also evaluating the psychometric properties and use of the APSI (e.g., how do scores on the APSI correlate with scores on more established measures such as the Parenting Stress Index?).

Academic Coping Strategies Scale (ACSS)

The ACSS was originally designed to assess college students’ coping strategies within the context of a specific academic stressor. Following initial support for the psychometric qualities of this scale (e.g., based on analyses of factor structure, internal consistency, test-retest stability, and validity evidence based on relationships with other variables), next steps in the development of the ACSS will be to modify the scale for use with middle and high school students so that professionals working in the schools will have an evidence-based method of assessing academic coping strategies among youth.
